How big the problem is

• Avast found more than 200 domains tied only to GTA 6 in a single 24-hour scan in early October, with about 10% rated high or medium risk. Examples included a fake store selling the "Ultimate Edition" with PlayStation-style design that asked for logins, payment and a crypto wallet. Preview report
• Surfshark counted 212 GTA 6-themed domains by mid-August. It judged 57 to be built for scams, and found about six new ones registered every day. Most were sitting dormant, which researchers say usually means they're being saved for launch week. Preview report
• BforeAI found 16 unauthorised GTA 6 apps on Google Play from more than 10 developer accounts, using the official "VI" logo. Some appeared in "Similar apps" next to Rockstar's real GTA V companion app. Preview report
• NordVPN identified 47 fraudulent GTA 6 pre-order listings, Allure Security reports. Preview report

Avast researcher Luis Corrons summed it up: scammers rely on fans' excitement "to act before people have time to think."

The most common GTA 6 scams

1. Fake PC downloads and demos

The most dangerous kind. In August, Malwarebytes found fake sites advertised in Google results as an "Official Download" with a "Play Now" button copied from Rockstar's real Extended Look page. Preview report The download was a 1.1 MB file called gta6_installer.exe (far too small for a real game) that installed Vidar, malware that steals saved passwords, autofill data and login cookies from up to 19 browsers. Stolen login cookies can let criminals into your accounts without your password or 2FA code.

2. Fake mobile apps and APKs

Countdown, "companion", map and "GTA 6 Mobile" apps that use Rockstar's artwork. Most exist to show ads or sell in-app purchases for a product that doesn't exist. Some list forex and trading keywords, which researchers say can be a sign of a switch to financial scams. Preview report About 7,500 people a month search for a GTA 6 mobile version, Surfshark estimates.

3. Fake pre-order stores

Copycat shops that take your card details, your PlayStation or Rockstar login, or crypto, and never deliver. They often look official and may even appear in search ads.

4. Beta keys and "early access"

Offers of beta keys, VIP access or early builds, usually paid in crypto. Rockstar hasn't run a GTA 6 beta. Confirmed

5. Crypto tokens and giveaways

"GTA 6 coins", fan tokens and giveaways that ask you to connect a crypto wallet. Connecting a wallet to a malicious site can drain it. This includes the memecoin promoted by the leaker CyberLeek. Why we advise against it.

6. Fake leak downloads

Zip files and links claiming to contain leaked footage or the full game. Besides spoilers, these are an easy way to deliver malware. GTA 6 leaks explained.

7. Fake Rockstar logins and impersonators

Pages copying the Rockstar Games Social Club sign-in to steal your account, and YouTube, TikTok or Discord accounts posing as Rockstar or "insiders" to push you towards the scams above.

Red flags checklist

• It offers GTA 6 on PC, phone, Switch or for free.
• It promises you can play before November 19.
• It asks you to connect a crypto wallet or pay in crypto.
• The web address isn't rockstargames.com, playstation.com, xbox.com or a retailer you know. Check the spelling carefully.
• It asks you to log in to PlayStation, Xbox or Rockstar from a link in a video, message or ad.
• The "installer" is tiny, or asks you to turn off your antivirus.
• The price is far below $79.99 for Standard or $99.99 for Ultimate.

Already downloaded something? Do this now

1. Disconnect the device from the internet and run a full scan with a trusted security program.
2. From a different, clean device, change your most important passwords, starting with email, then banking, PlayStation, Xbox and Rockstar.
3. Sign out of all sessions on those accounts and remove devices you don't recognise. This matters because stolen login cookies can bypass passwords.
4. Turn on two-factor authentication everywhere you can.
5. Check for changes you didn't make, such as email forwarding rules, new recovery details or connected apps.
6. If you paid by card, contact your bank. If you connected a crypto wallet, move any remaining funds to a new wallet immediately.

Reporting a scam: report fake sites to Google Safe Browsing, report fake apps from their store listing, and report impersonation accounts on the platform where you found them.
