Will GTA 6 run at 60fps? PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox performance explained

Confirmed said or shown by Rockstar or Take-TwoPreview report from press previews or credible reportingRumor / leak unverified

The short answer

No 60fps mode has been confirmed on any console. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson told creators at the August previews that GTA 6 currently targets 30fps on consoles, and that he'd need to check with the technical team whether a 60fps option comes at launch or later. Preview report Rockstar hasn't published official graphics modes, resolutions or frame rates. Confirmed

If 60fps matters to you, assume you won't get it on November 19, and treat anything better as a bonus.

What Rockstar has said

The detail came from Brazilian creator Davy Jones, one of the people invited to play GTA 6 at Rockstar North in Edinburgh ahead of the August 27 Extended Look. According to his account, Nelson said the game is "currently targeting 30fps on all consoles", and couldn't commit to a 60fps option at launch or afterwards. Preview report The Extended Look itself was captured on a standard PS5. Confirmed

That's the only on-the-record comment from Rockstar. There's been no official performance trailer and no list of modes on PlayStation or Xbox store pages.

PS5 ProNot announcedNot announced; listed as "PS5 Pro Enhanced"Badge confirmed
Xbox Series X30fps targetNot announcedPreview report
Xbox Series SNot discussedNot announcedUnknown
PCNo PC version announcedConfirmed

The Xbox Series S is confirmed as a launch platform. Confirmed Rockstar hasn't said anything about how GTA 6 runs on it, and it's the weakest of the three consoles, so expect a lower resolution than on Series X.

What "PS5 Pro Enhanced" means

GTA 6's PlayStation Store listing carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced badge. Confirmed Sony uses that label for any game with Pro-specific improvements, but Rockstar hasn't said what they are.

The PS5 Pro has a much stronger graphics chip but only a slightly faster processor. Analysts including Digital Foundry think GTA 6 is limited mainly by the processor, because of how much simulation runs at once, so the Pro's extra power would most likely go into a sharper, more stable image rather than double the frame rate. Preview report A 40fps mode for 120Hz TVs is a common guess as a middle ground. Rumor / leak Rumors that Sony engineers helped Rockstar hit 60fps on the Pro have never been confirmed. Rumor / leak

Base PS5 owners may get some help too: Sony's new QSSR upscaler could sharpen the image if Rockstar adds support, which it hasn't announced. What QSSR is and why it may not make launch.

Why 30fps?

At 30fps the console has about 33 milliseconds to build each frame; at 60fps it has about 17. Open-world games spend much of that time on things you don't see directly: hundreds of people and cars with their own routines, physics, weather and police that remember you. GTA 6 does more of that than any Rockstar game so far, and the PS5 and Xbox Series processors haven't changed since 2020.

Rockstar has also always picked detail over frame rate on console. GTA V ran at 30fps on PS4 and Xbox One and only gained a 60fps option with the 2022 PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version. Red Dead Redemption 2 has never had an official 60fps console update. Confirmed Rockstar North has said it wants GTA 6 to "feel" real rather than chase photorealism. Why Rockstar avoids photorealism.

Could 60fps come later?

Possibly. Nelson's answer left the door open to a 60fps option "at launch or later", and patches adding performance modes are common now. Preview report But nothing is promised. The only near-certain route to higher frame rates is an eventual PC version, which hasn't been announced. What we know about GTA 6 on PC.

Which console should you buy for GTA 6?

  • You already own a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S: keep it. Both run GTA 6 at launch, and there's no confirmed frame rate advantage on any other console.
  • You don't own a current console: buy a standard PS5 or Xbox Series X sooner rather than later. A retail buyer told The Game Business this summer that component shortages mean stores won't get as many consoles as they want before GTA 6. Preview report Microsoft also raised Xbox Series prices from August 1. Confirmed
  • You're tempted by a PS5 Pro: only if image quality matters to you and you can find one at the normal price. After the Extended Look, US third-party sellers were reportedly asking around $1,300 for the $899 console. Preview report In Japan, Sony is only selling the Pro to players with 60 hours of playtime. How the lottery works.

Don't pay scalper prices for a frame rate nobody has confirmed. If Rockstar announces performance modes before launch, we'll update this page straight away.
