How to pre-load GTA 6
PS5
- Pre-order the Standard or Ultimate Edition on PlayStation Store.
- Turn on automatic downloads in your console settings and leave the PS5 in rest mode connected to the internet, so the download starts on its own at midnight on November 12.
- Or start it by hand: open your Game Library on November 12, find Grand Theft Auto VI and select Download.
Read the refund section below before turning on automatic downloads.
Xbox Series X|S
- Pre-order on Microsoft Store.
- Use the sleep (instant-on) power mode with automatic updates on, so the console can download overnight.
- Or go to My games & apps on November 12, find GTA 6 under your pre-orders or ready-to-install list, and install it.
Physical copies
Buy the box on or after November 12, then redeem the code on PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store and download as above. The code must match your console and store region. If you've ordered a box online, check the delivery date: a box that arrives on the 18th leaves you very little download time.
Pre-loading can end your right to a refund
This catches people out every big launch. On PlayStation Store, if you paid for a pre-order more than 14 days before release, you can cancel any time up to release, but only if you haven't started downloading the main game. Pre-loading counts as downloading. If automatic downloads are on, the pre-load can start without you doing anything, and the refund route closes. (Source: PlayStation Store cancellation policy.)
So decide whether you're keeping the game before November 12. On Xbox, check Microsoft's current cancellation rules in your order history before the pre-load starts. Policies vary by region.
How big is the download?
Rockstar hasn't announced the install size. Any figure you see online, including numbers from store listings that haven't been finalised, is a guess. It will be large, so make room now. For reference, the standard PS5 has about 667 GB of usable storage, the Xbox Series X about 802 GB and the Xbox Series S only about 364 GB. Series S owners in particular should clear space early. Expect a day-one patch on top of the pre-load as well; its size hasn't been announced either.

What you can't pre-load
- PC. There's no PC version, so no PC pre-order or pre-load. What we know about GTA 6 on PC.
- PS4 and Xbox One. GTA 6 is PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
- Online. There's no online mode at launch, so there's nothing extra to download for it. GTA 6 Online explained.
Be wary of anything offering an "early" GTA 6 download, beta or unlock. They're scams.
