Physical copies of GTA 6 contain a download code, not a disc. Confirmed Boxed copies go on sale on November 12, the same day digital pre-loading starts, and you'll need to download the full game either way. After "is it on PC?", whether a real disc follows later is one of the questions we get asked most. Here's everything that has actually been said.
What Take-Two's CEO said
On August 7, the day of Take-Two's quarterly results, CEO Strauss Zelnick defended the decision, according to Kotaku's transcript. Confirmed
He said Take-Two's business is already "well over 90 percent digitally distributed", and that most games need an online connection to register anyway. He added that "that doesn't mean we won't have physical editions now and then", comparing them to vinyl in the music business, but that "in other instances, it just won't make sense." Confirmed That isn't a promise of a disc, and it isn't a firm no either.
The Rockstar Support email
In late June, players shared a reply from Rockstar Support saying a physical copy would be available "during the following months". Rumor / leak The reply never used the word "disc", and Rockstar hasn't repeated it publicly. "Physical copy" could just as easily mean another code-in-a-box release.
The December disc rumor
Polish insider Graczdari, who correctly reported in March that GTA 6 would launch without a disc, told PPE.pl that a disc version would follow the launch, around December 2026. Rumor / leak The theory is that a code-only launch stops finished game files reaching shops early, which is how many big games leak. It's plausible, but nobody has confirmed it, and Zelnick's comments in August didn't back it up.
Some retailers refused to stock it
At least two specialist stores, Video Games Plus and Loot Box Gaming, said they won't sell the code-in-a-box edition, arguing that a box with a code in it isn't a physical game. Preview report A redeemed code can't be resold, which also rules out trade-ins. Big retailers are selling it anyway, and in the first weeks of pre-orders the boxed version topped Amazon's video game charts in the US and UK. Preview report

So which should you buy?
If you want to play on November 19, the boxed code and the digital version get you the same thing: a download. The box is only worth it if you want something on the shelf, want to pay in cash or need a gift to wrap. If a playable disc matters to you, for resale or because of a slow connection, there's nothing to buy yet. Be wary of any listing that calls itself a GTA 6 "disc edition": no such product has been announced.
Whichever you choose, start clearing storage space, because Rockstar hasn't announced the install size. How GTA 6 pre-loading works.
