How many people have pre-ordered GTA 6? Every number so far, and which to trust

Take-Two says demand is "unprecedented and astonishing". It hasn't said how many. Here's every figure that's out there, and what each one is worth.

How many people have pre-ordered GTA 6? Every number so far, and which to trust

Take-Two has never published a GTA 6 pre-order number. Confirmed Every figure in circulation comes from analysts, data firms or single retailers, and they measure very different things. Here they are side by side, with what each one actually covers.

What Take-Two and Xbox have said

On August 7, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said "the level of pre-orders is unprecedented and astonishing", but added that "we just don't know how it'll translate into sales" and "we just don't believe in claiming victory before it occurs." Confirmed

On September 24, Xbox's Matthew Ball said GTA 6 is breaking pre-order records on Xbox, again without numbers. Confirmed What Xbox said.

Every estimate so far

All of these are third-party estimates. Preview report Sensor Tower's numbers are the most widely quoted, but it hasn't published its method, and its tracker updates weekly, so treat them as a direction rather than a count.

What about "$1 billion in pre-orders"?

That claim spread on social media in early summer. Newzoo called it "implausible", saying no game in its data has reached that kind of pre-order total so far ahead of release. Preview report Treat any "$1 billion pre-orders" headline as unsourced.

How big could launch week be?

Newzoo modelled launch-week sales of roughly $3.3 billion to $5.2 billion, with a central case of about $4.5 billion, or around 51 million copies at an average price of $88. Preview report The most bullish public forecast, from investment firm Konvoy, expects $7.6 billion in bookings in the first 60 days. Preview report For scale, GTA V made $800 million on its first day in 2013 and passed $1 billion in three days. Confirmed

PS5 vs Xbox

Every estimate puts PlayStation far ahead, usually at around three-quarters of pre-orders. Preview report That's expected: the PS5 has sold far more consoles this generation and Sony is GTA 6's marketing partner. Xbox says its share of GTA 6 pre-orders matches its share of the console market. Confirmed

When we'll get real numbers

Take-Two usually reports its July to September quarter in early November, which this year falls just before launch. Expect more adjectives, not unit counts: Zelnick has made a point of not "claiming victory" early. The first hard sales figures will most likely come after November 19.

Our read

The honest answer to "how many people have pre-ordered GTA 6?" is that nobody outside Take-Two knows. What the estimates agree on is the shape: record demand, three-quarters of it on PlayStation, and a launch week that analysts expect to beat anything in entertainment. That's why other publishers have moved out of November.
