Every big game that moved out of GTA 6's way, and the ones that stayed

Six weeks out, November belongs to Rockstar. Here's who moved, who stayed put, and who insists GTA 6 had nothing to do with it.

Every big game that moved out of GTA 6's way, and the ones that stayed

GTA 6 launches on November 19, and most big publishers have kept well clear of it. Three major publishers told The Game Business in 2025 that they were ready to delay games to avoid GTA 6, and one live-service studio boss called it "a huge meteor" they planned to stay clear of. Preview report Here's how the 2026 calendar actually shook out.

Who moved

GameWhat changedWas it GTA 6?
FableOctober 2026 to February 2027Strongly implied. Xbox listed GTA VI among the holiday's big releases when it announced the delay, and director Ralph Fulton later said the reason was "pretty apparent to everybody".
Phantom Blade ZeroSeptember 9 to October 29Denied. Director Soulframe Liang said "99% of the decision was about development."
Forza Horizon 6Launched May 19, 2026, not in the series' usual autumn slotReported by insiders, never confirmed by Microsoft.

Fable's move is the clearest case. Xbox announced it on May 29, saying it wanted the game to have "the dedicated moment it deserves". Confirmed Fulton told IGN he was happy to "go toe-to-toe with a bunch of other games", just not this one, without naming it. Preview report

September became the escape hatch

When GTA 6 moved to November, a lot of big games landed in September instead. GamesIndustry.biz called September "the refuge of choice for games fleeing the GTA 6 launch". Preview report The cluster included:

  • Marvel's Wolverine: September 15
  • Control Resonant and Silent Hill: Townfall: September 24
  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword: September 25

What's left near GTA 6

DateGamePlatforms
October 23Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4PS5, Xbox, PC, Switch 2
October 29Phantom Blade ZeroPS5, PC
November 5The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (remake)Switch 2
November 19Grand Theft Auto VIPS5, Xbox Series X|S

Call of Duty kept its usual late-October slot, nearly four weeks ahead of GTA 6. Nintendo is the only platform holder with a big November game, and its Ocarina of Time remake is on a console GTA 6 isn't coming to. That rivalry was big enough for its own SNL sketch.

Even updates are dodging it

It isn't just new games. Developers of two top-10 live-service games told The Game Business they would shift major updates by around three weeks to stay out of GTA 6's launch window. Preview report Twitch's CEO said much the same thing in September: it's smart to launch in October or wait until the GTA 6 frenzy cools. What he said.

Why everyone is scared

Analysts at Newzoo expect GTA 6 to make roughly $3.3 billion to $5.2 billion in its launch week. Preview report Most players who want a big new game in November will buy that one first, and an 80-hour story keeps them busy for weeks. Every GTA 6 pre-order estimate, fact-checked.

Our read

For players, the result is a quiet November with GTA 6 and little else, followed by a crowded early 2027 as delayed games come back. If you were waiting on Fable, February is the new date. If you're buying one game this holiday, you already know which one.
