Rockstar isn't building a Disney World. Preview report Asked by Game Informer whether central Florida, including Orlando and its famous theme parks, would appear in Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar said Leonida won't recreate it. That rules out the Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld parodies fans have hoped for since the first trailer.
The answer came from Paul MacPherson, Rockstar's senior vice president of environment art, in Game Informer's 14-page cover story that went live on September 29. Most headlines today call it a flat no. His actual wording was a little softer, so here's exactly what was said and what's still open.
What Rockstar actually said
MacPherson explained that the environment team constantly weighs landscapes, towns, buildings, landmarks, plant species and even rock formations, then works with the design and narrative teams to narrow that list down to what best serves the game. Preview report He added that even without those exact locations, everything Rockstar is building is meant to give players the "full Florida experience".
Our read: MacPherson didn't name each park and reject it. He said the game may not have those exact locations. That's about as close to a "no" as Rockstar gets seven weeks before launch, and every major outlet has reported it that way, but it's worth knowing the precise wording.
Some reports also say Florida's Space Coast, home to Cape Canaveral's launch pads, is left out. Preview report We haven't seen that in Rockstar's own words, so treat it as likely rather than certain.
Why it makes sense
- Geography. Leonida is built around Vice City, Rockstar's Miami. The real Orlando is roughly 230 miles north of Miami, well outside the South Florida core every trailer and preview has focused on.
- Map budget. Leonida is reported to be roughly twice the size of GTA 5's map, but even that can't hold all of Florida. Rockstar picked Vice City, the Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga over a theme park corridor. Read our map size story.
- How GTA does parody. Rockstar never licenses real brands. It builds fictional stand-ins and mocks the originals instead. A full resort would be a huge build for one joke, when radio ads, TV shows and billboards can land the same satire for far less.
Where the "Fairyland" rumor came from
Rumor / leak For years, fans have passed around the idea of a Disney World parody called Fairyland. It traces back to a fan-made map stitched together from trailer clues and leaks, not to anything Rockstar published. That map put Fairyland in the north of the state, and the name stuck on the GTA 6 subreddit.
MacPherson's answer is the first time Rockstar has addressed the theme park question at all. It doesn't rule out smaller attractions. GTA IV had Funland, a closed-down amusement park based on Coney Island, so a boardwalk or roadside attraction in Leonida would still fit the series.
