The Game Awards 2026 takes place on Thursday, December 10 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, host Geoff Keighley confirmed in February. Confirmed GTA 6 comes out three weeks earlier, on November 19. Whether it can be nominated for Game of the Year is less clear than it sounds.
The release cutoff: probably in, by a day
Last year, games had to be out by November 21, 2025 at 9 PM PT, the third Friday of November. If the same rule applies, the 2026 cutoff is Friday, November 20, one day after GTA 6 launches. Preview report The Game Awards hasn't published its 2026 rules, so this is based on past years.
The real problem: jury timing
Being eligible and getting a fair vote are different things. Last year the jury's first round was on November 4 and nominees were announced on November 17, according to former games journalist Alanah Pearce. Preview report On that timeline, the jury would vote before GTA 6 is out.
That leaves two options: early review copies for the jury, or a later voting window this year. Neither has been announced, and with an 80-hour story, even early copies leave little time.

Our read
GTA 6 will compete for the big awards, but its strongest shot is probably the early-2027 shows, or The Game Awards 2027 if it misses this year's. History is a reminder, too: Red Dead Redemption 2 lost Game of the Year to God of War in 2018.
