The short answer

Yes, you can go inside a lot of buildings in GTA 6, but not all of them, and nobody outside Rockstar knows the exact number.

Game Informer's cover story, published September 29, reports that a significant number of Leonida's buildings can be fully entered, each with its own detailed interior. Preview report It also says Rockstar gave extra attention to rooftops, alleyways and interiors to make the world denser than Los Santos.

Rockstar North's Rob Nelson has made the same point in interviews. Speaking to French magazine Trois Couleurs, he reportedly said players can enter many buildings, and that the number is enormous, without giving a figure. Preview report

Interiors we've actually seen

These have appeared in Rockstar's own trailers and the 26-minute Netflix Extended Look, or were described by press who saw the game at Rockstar North.

Robberies are the best sign that interiors are built for play, not just decoration. Previews describe jobs where you choose between blowing a safe quickly or cracking it slowly, and many locations have back exits to slip out while police surround the front. See how robberies work.

The numbers going around, and where they come from

Search for GTA 6 interiors and you'll find confident figures. None of them come from Rockstar.

  • "700+ interiors, confirmed by Rockstar." Rumor / leak Rockstar has never published a count. The figure spread through fan and aggregator sites, and some pages even present full "lists" of interiors for a game that isn't out.
  • "40% of large buildings and every small shop." Rumor / leak Traced to insider claims and readings of the 2022 development leak. Unverified.
  • "70% of buildings are enterable." Rumor / leak From a 2023 social media claim made before the first trailer. Unverified.

The 2022 leak did show early footage of a store robbery with a working interior, but that was years-old development footage. Our leak explainer covers what was and wasn't confirmed. We don't reproduce leaked material.

How it compares with GTA 5 and Red Dead 2

GTA 5 launched with relatively few interiors you could walk into freely. Many shops and buildings in Los Santos were facades, and modders later found rooms Rockstar had built and then sealed off.

Red Dead Redemption 2 went much further: most buildings in its towns, from saloons and gunsmiths to homes, could be entered without loading screens. That's the better guide to Rockstar's current thinking. The catch is scale: a frontier town is much easier to fill than a modern city full of high-rises, so expect GTA 6's skyscrapers to be mostly closed while street-level shops, bars and homes open up.

What Rockstar hasn't said

  • How many buildings can be entered, or what share of the map that is.
  • Which interiors are open in free roam and which only open during missions.
  • Whether there are loading screens. Official footage cuts between outside and inside without visible loading, but that doesn't prove it in normal play.
  • Whether you can buy property, and how many safehouses there are.

We'll update this guide as Rockstar reveals more, and again once the game is out on November 19.

GTA 6 interiors FAQ

Can you enter buildings in GTA 6?

Yes, many of them. Game Informer's September 29 cover story reports that a significant number of buildings in Leonida can be fully entered, each with its own detailed interior.

How many buildings can you enter in GTA 6?

Rockstar hasn't given a number. Figures like 700 interiors, 40% or 70% of buildings come from leaks, rumors and aggregator sites, not from Rockstar.

Can you enter every building in GTA 6?

No official source says so, and it has never been true of a GTA game. Expect many more enterable buildings than GTA 5, not all of them.

Does GTA 6 have more interiors than GTA 5?

Everything shown so far points that way. GTA 5 had relatively few free-roam interiors, while GTA 6 footage and previews show stores, clubs, apartments and businesses you walk straight into.

Can you rob stores and banks in GTA 6?

Yes. Press previews say stores, businesses and banks can be robbed, alone or as a couple, and many locations have back exits for escaping.
